Nachappa C K Thank you very much for your help and suggestion. My laptop is Lenovo Yoga 3 and I had not made any changes to the laptop except upgrade to Windows 10 prior to this issue.
I have uninstalled and re-installed the Realtek driver but there was no change. Although when I checked the status of the stereo speakers it said the equipment was working properly and the sound still only came from headphones.
I went to the Device Manager, as you suggested, and it gave the option of reverting to previous sound device which I did and now the laptop speakers have sound from Microsoft High Definition Audio Device. The only frustration is that when I insert the headphones it does not automatically transfer sound to the headphones.
I have to change the default device manually. You do not expect to have these kind of little problems when you have paid over one grand for a laptop and that is quite frustrating!
